The San Diego Beacon Community has been certified by the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) and is now an active participating organization on the Nationwide Health Information Network (NwHIN). San Diego Beacon Community is one of the first Beacon Communities on NwHIN, a milestone that was recently announced at the ONC Annual Meeting in Washington DC just this month. San Diego Beacon Community will be joining other organizations such as the Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, Social Security Administration and others to securely exchange patient health information on the NwHIN platform.
The San Diego Beacon Health Information Exchange will launch in early December starting with selected pilot sites at the following organizations:
- Children’s Primary Care Medical Group
- Rady Children’s Hospital
- Sharp Community Medical Group
- UC San Diego Health System
- VA San Diego Healthcare System

The public comments period on the revised regulations of Demonstration Projects for the Electronic Exchange of Health Information concluded on November 7, 2011. The public comment period had commenced on October 7, 2011. CalOHII staff are currently reviewing the public comments, and preparing responses. The organizations that have provided comments to the revised demonstration projects regulations are: California Medical Association, Cal eConnect, Consumers Union’s and Center for Democracy and Technology, Kaiser Permanente, Redwood Mednet, and Yuba-Sutter Healthcare Council.

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT has announced on November 1, 2011 on the Federal Register that it will conduct a nationwide campaign for the purpose of educating the public about the importance of privacy and security in the electronic exchange of their personal health information. The public comment period on the information collection is 60 days. In the next two years, through the use of surveys, in-depth screening, focus groups, and website usability testing, responses from 40,500 consumers and health professionals will be evaluated. The use of mobile devices to communicate health data is one of the areas that will be highlighted to gauge consumer attitudes and preferences on the issue.
Release of Revised Regulations of the Demonstration Projects for the Electronic Exchange of Health Information

CalOHII received many public comments following the publication of the initial Regulations of the Demonstration Projects for the Electronic Exchange of Health information and its corresponding Statement of Reasons released on March 1, 2011. CalOHII has taken into consideration all of the public comments and has revised the Regulations of the Demonstration Project for the Electronic Exchange of Health Information and has provided another Statement of Reasons for the public to make comments over the next 30 days. The Statement of Reasons, text of the revised regulations, reference documentation, and public comments received March 1, through April 1, 2011 can be found on the HIE Demonstration Projects page. A Notice of Proposed Regulations is also been posted with information regarding the public hearing for the revised regulations and submission of written comments.
